Hi, I'm Jake Spiegel

It's easy to live without a car in Washington DC. However, some parts of town are pretty tough to reach using public transportation, and sometimes it's hard to carry a lot of Costco groceries on the Metro.

Luckily, there are lots of carsharing options here in DC. We have Zipcar, Car2go, Free2Move, Turo, and Getaround. Sometimes it's tricky deciding which service to use for which task. Car2go and Free2Move are similar services in that you can pick up and drop off a car anywhere in DC, but their pricing structures are slightly different, making it hard to figure out which one would be best for a given errand.

Here, I built a little calculator to see which service would be cheaper for a particular rental length. (Even though the Mercedes Car2go is never cheaper, sometimes it's fun to splurge, so I included them in the calculator as well)

To see how much each alternative would cost, input the length (in minutes) of the trip you're taking:

Notes: These prices are current as of 3/4/2019

I also assume that you have taken fewer than 100 trips using Car2go during the calendar year: Car2go automatically appends a $1 driver protection fee for people who fall in to that category, which I suspect describes the majority of Car2go users.

Also, these prices are not inclusive of taxes.
